376. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh,Dr.(1891-1983)

Prafulla Chandra Ghosh (Bengali:প্রফুল্ল চন্দ্র ঘোষ Prophullo Chôndro Ghosh) (1891–1983) was the first Chief Minister of West BengalIndia. He was Chief Minister in three West Bengal governments, first in the Indian National Congress government from August 15, 1947 to August 14, 1948, then in the Progressive Democratic Alliance Frontgovernment from November 2, 1967 to February 20, 1968, and again in a coalition government led by the Indian National Congress from April 2, 1971 to June 28, 1971..
Early life
Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was born in Dhaka (now in Bangla Desh) in December 1891.He received his education in Jagannath college and earned high scholarship with his extraordinary  merit. He successfully completed his graduation from Calcutta University in Science and also passed B.A.andM.M.A. from the same university.He came in contact with the revolutionary Pulin Das while he was astudent. After completion of his higher education he was employed as a research scholar in Dacca college and srved there for two years.Later he joined in Provincial Education Service in Dacca. He also served as a professor for a short period in Presidency College, Calcutta. Eventually, he was recruited in British Imperial Service and served as a  Deputy assay Master in Calcutta Mint.He was the first Indian served in this post. He got his Doctorate degree (D.Sc.) from Calcutta University after completion of his research work.
Political Career
In his youth he was allied with Dr. Suresh Chandra Banerjee. Later he became a follower of Gandhiji and joined non-cooperation movement. He gave his service as a   Assay Master and began  worrking in Abhoy Ashram.In 1921, he conducted a volunteer corps and was detained by the police. He then became secretary of Provincial Congress Committee in 1924..Abhoy Ashram was then a social organisation serving in a village for all round welfare of the villagers.He joined Abhoy Ashram along with Dr. Suresh Chandra Banerjee At this time he wore Khadi Dhoti, Punjabi and Tupi. He was appointed as the secretary of the Civil DIsobedience Council in 1930. He broke the Salt law and was arrested and imprisoned for two years and wasreleased after Gandhi-Irwin pact.
He was the elected as the Chairman of Calcutta session of the Congress but as Congress was declared unlawful he was again arrested and detained for 6 months.During the middle of Thirties Ghosh tried to develop the villages through Abhoy Ashram including Industrialisation. He swas elected President of Relief Committee of West bengal in 1936. He was elected as a member of AICC in 1939 and performed self-satyagraha against war in 1940. 
As Chief Minister 
After the withdrawal of British rule Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was selected as the Chief Miniseter of west Bengal 
on 15th Aug 1947 and he tried to develop the administrative system and remove corruption . He enforced anti-corruption bill. He formed " Bangla Bhasha Paribhasha Committee." In his time the Jorasanko Building of Tagore was handed over to Rabindrabharati Siciety.But due to the conspiracy of the vested interests and the Industrialists  and the difference of opinion with the High command of the Congress forced him to resign   on 14 January 1948... He again became Chief minister on 2 Nov 1967 and continued till 20th Feb 1968 In the third time he hold the position on 2 April 1971and continued upto 20th June 1971 He also joned in first non-Congress Cabinet under Ajoy Mukherjee. but formed resigned from the cabinet he formed Progressive Democratic Front in 1967.
His important works are Banglar Prachin Bharatiya Sangskriti< Cultural History of Undivided Bengal,. He passed 8 years in prison at different times.
He died in Calcutta in 1983.
