Jyotirmayee Ganguli was born in Calcutta in 1889. She was a Congress leader and an M.A. She was the first female graduate in Bengal. She was a Physician, a political worker and social reformer.Dr. Kadambini Ganguli was her mother. She was the Principal of Brahmo Valika Vidyalay and formed Congress Female Volunteers association.She became a member of the Congress Working committee after the he female non cooperation movement.She gave up her service and joined Indian Freedom Struggle in 1930. She was appointed first female alderman in Calcutta Corporation in 1933.She became vice-President of the Nari Satyagraha Samity formed under the bleadership of Urmila Devi. Under the leadership of this Samity members pickted in Burabazar Market.Inspite of the circular of 144 in Calcutta, a rally under the leadership of Urmila Devi and herself was organised to go to Deshabandhu Park.Throughout the way Mountain Police was ready their activities..The female volunteers were posted on two sides of the rally to guard the male volunteers.On the next day herself and Urmila DEvi were put to Jail and imprisoned for six months. In 1931, she saved physically Subhas Chandra taking risk by herself.She was again imprisoned in 1932 for participating in Civil Disobedience movement. During legal procedure of INA fauz, Sah Noaz Khan, Dhiloan Shygal etc a rally was organised in Calcutta in prohibited area to go to Dalhousie Square with the demand of their release order .When the police fired a student Rameshwar Bandyopadhyay became dead by the bullets of the police. While they were returning in a car a police van ran over their car and as a result she became wounded and ultimately died.
