45.Asok Mehta

Asoka Mehta (24 October 1911 Bhavnagar–1984) was an Indian freedom fighter and socialist politician. He helped organize the socialist wing of the Indian National Congress, along with Jaya Prakash Narayan, and was heavily involved in the politics and government of the western city of Bombay.
Mehta was arrested during the Quit India movement, and after India's independence, helped organize trade unions in Bombay. He also served as Mayor of Bombay city from 1946 to 1947. Mehta retired from active politics in the early 1950s, and wrote several books on his experiences, on India's freedom struggle and the importance of socialist reforms.
In September,1952 the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party and the Socialist Party merged to form the Praja Socialist Party (PSP) and Asoka Mehta became its general secretary. he was PSP's president during 1959-1963. In 1963, he agreed to become deputy chairman of the Planning Commission and after the expulsion from the party in 1964, he joined Indian National Congress.
He was member of 1st and 2nd Lok sabha during 1954-1957 and 1957-1962. He was elected third time for 4th Lok Sabha from Bhandara (Lok Sabha constituency).[1] He was member of Rajya sabha during 3-4-1966 till 26-2-1967



Asoka Mehta was born in Bombay in 1911.He was one of the founder of congress Socialist Party.he joined non Cooperation movement in 1932 resigning from the post of Professor.He was arrested several times for participating in Freedom movement.Along with Jayprakash Narayan and others he formed Congress Socialist Party in 1934.. He was founder President of Hind Mazdoor sabha.. In 1952 the Peasants and workers Party and socialist party merged to form Praja Socialist Party and he became the President. He became the vice-President of the Planning Commission of India and a cabinet minister. He was one of the pioneer personality to participate in forming the movement of Non-Communist socialist movement.
