805. Saroj Mukherjee (1911-1990)


Saroj Mukherjee was born in Bahadurpur, Burdwan.He was an Indian freedom fighter and a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the secretary of the West Bengal state committee of the Communist party. Mukherjee joined Indian freedom movement at the age of 13 when he was just a young student. He joined Indian National Congress in 1924. He joined Communist Party of India in 1931 and became a whole timer in 1938.
He took important role in promoting Communism and to form left front. 
Saroj Mukherjee married Kanak Dasgupta in 1941 who was also a Communist leader and secretary of Mahila Samity.
He was the editor of the Bengali daily Swadhinata between 1956 and 1962. Later he became editor of CPI(M)'s weekly Ganashakti, he remained editor of this newspaper till his death.
His father inspired him about the ideology of Swami Vivekananda. He became follower of Socialism and Marxism from Dr. Bhupendranath Datta, brother of Swami Vivekananda. He had close relation with the movements launched by Gandhiji and he also had deep connection with Anusilan Samity and Yugantar. At the beginning of his political career he was a Congress worker. He had his lesson in politis from Atulya Ghosh. He formed A>B>S>A> in Burdwan and Hooghly. He had suffered 1 years jail life for participating in civil disobedience movement. After the adoption of decision in Congress in 1931( Gandhi Arwin pact) , he left Congress and joined Communist Party. He got he membership of the party in 1941. After the division of party  in 1964, he joined in CPI(M). After the death of Promod Dasgupta he became the Chairman of West Bengal Left Front and retained the post till his death. and secretary of west Bengal State  unit of CPI(M). He was a member of Polit Buireau from 1985-86. He was the chief editor of Ganashakti, party's mouth piece. The honourable minister Binoy Choudhury was his friend since his boyhood. They were born in neighbouring village and on the same date.  
He died in 1990.
