787.Sanat Kumar Roychoudhury , 791. Santosh Kumar Mitra (1900-1931)

Sanat Kumar Roychoudhury became Joint Secretary of All India Student Congress in 1940. He remained in jail for 5 years during quit India movement in 1942. Later he became a member of RCPI. He was a Professor of Philosophy of Burdwan University. . His important work is " In Defence of freedom."


Santosh Kumar Mitra was born in Calcutta. He was a good student of Presidency College. He sat for M.A. examination in 1818 as a prisoner under rule three Regulation. Later he passed LL B examination. He joined with all his strength in Non-Cooperation movement  in 1921.and was arrested. He founded voluntary organisation namely Swaraj Sevak Sangha under Congress. He was convicted with Sankaritola murder case and Alipore Conspiracy case and was released with honour.Congress activitiesand became vice-president of Central Calcutta Congress Committeeand was elected as a member of state working committee.   He was again arrested under Bengal ordinance. He remained confined in jail under regulation three of 1818 upto 1926. After release he again joined in  Congress activities. He was the main organiser  of 1st All India Socialist Conference presided by Jawaharlal Nehru in Rammohan Library Hall. He was in the fore front of all the trade unions under Dr. Bhupendranath Dutta, Prof. Jyotish Ghosh, Jatindramohan Sengupta and Bipin Behari Ganguly. He  visited whole of Bengal to organise Youth organisation. He was a member of Peasants Organisation of Muzaffar Ahmed. He remeined confined in Hijli jail being arrested after Chittagong Armoury Raid. Here he died by police firing on 16.9.31. This incident had moved Rabindranath Tagore and addressed a mammoth gathering under Monument at the age of 70.
