716 A. Santipada Chakrabarty, 717. Shantisudha Ghosh (1907-1992)

Santipada Chakrabarty was born in Chittagong. In his student life he went for picketing in 1930 and was beaten by cane by Gora Surgent. Later he joined revolutionary organisation in Chittagong. He participated in attacking European Club in Pahartali under the leadership of Pritilata Waddedar. When Masterda was going to be arrested in Gairala village, he was successful in penetrating the barricade of soldiers by firing with his left hand inspite of his right hand became inactive by a bullet injury. He was arrested after a few months in 1934. He suffered jail life for 8 years in Cellular jail.


Shantisudha Ghosh was born in Barisal town. The famous freedom fighter and educationist Principal Devaprasad Ghosh was her brother. She secured 1st class first position in Mathematics. She became Ishan Scholar being first among all female candidates in 1928. After the Jalianwalabag incident in 1919, her mind became conscious about mother land. She became associated with Jagantar Dal, Shankar Math, Tarun Sangha etc revolutionary organisation.She took the responsibility of keeping gun, revolver etc prohibited amunitions in a secret place along with Aparajita Ghosh. When all the male members were arrested in 1930-32, responsibilities of conducting revolution rested upon her and some other female members. With the help of the revolutionary Kalyani Das, she made contacts with Dinesh Majumdarand other revolutioaries. She became professor in Victoria College in 1932. She was sent to presidency jail in 1832 suspecting removal of money from Grindlay's Bank . She was kept intern in 1934. She was released in 1937. During Quit India movement in  1942, she resigned from the post of commissioner of Barisal.She was arrested on 27th Sept . After few days she was kept intern in her own house due to her ill health. She worked as a member of All India Mahila Samity in relief work in the famine of 1943. She came to West Bengal in 1950 being unable to find no other alternative.  She was regular contributor of Joyashree and Mandira. She donated her own house for Sree Aurobindo Institute of Culture. She became Principal of Hooghly Womens' ollege at the end of her life.
