688. Labanyaprova Dutta (1888-1971), 689. Labanyaprova Dasgupta (1900-1984)

Labanyaprova Dutta was born in Berhampur, Murshidabad. She was an untiring freedom fighter. She was married at 9 years old. Her elder brother Surendranath Roy was associated with revolutionary Barin Ghosh. She was inspired by him. She kept in a secret place a revolver and abandoned books given by him.She became widow at the age of 23 years. After the death of Jatin Das in Lahore Jail by fasting in 1929, she and her daughter, Shovarani, took oath for sacrificing their life for the cause of Country. She took the responsibility of the post of Secretary of South Calcutta Congress Committee in 1930. She and Sovarani founded an organisation named Anandamath for complete devotion and sacrifice to  their country. She also formed Nari Satyagraha Samity in 1930.They conducted movements in the name of Samity. At this moment she went to Mahisbathan to join Salt Satyagraha. She had to suffer three months jail for joining civil disobedience movement. Later she was elected as a  vice-president of 24-Parganas District Congress Committee. She was conducting a rally on 26th Jan 1931 and became wounded by police lathi-charges. Her right hand became fractured. In this condition she went to Diamond Harbour jail for breaking civil rules . She was jailed for six months for defying Govt. orders. She was again jailed for 18 months as an RI prisoners. The widows were successful in fulfilling their demands of making their own food in the jail after 14 days fasting. The Bangiya Congress President Surendramohan Ghosh went to jail with personal bond in 1940. He nominated Labanyaprova as President.Shewasin the post upto1945. She bore with smiling face many tortures of the police.


Labanyaprova Dasgupta was born in Barisaal. After the death of her father she had to come to her maternal uncle's house and came in contact with Revolutionary Satndranath Sengupta and Lila Nag and began her political life. She remained four years state prisoner from 1934 and detained from 1942-1945 in Quit India movement. She remained in East Pakistan after Partition.She became an ambassador in Dhaka Office. She died in Sodepur near Calcutta.
