715. Santi Ghosh, Das (1916-1989), 716. Santi Das, Kabir

Santi Ghosh, Das was born in Kolkata. Her ancestor's house was at Barisal.Her father, Devendranath Ghosh was a professor of Coomilla College. Santi was brought up at that place. She was a student of Faizunnesa Balika Vidyalaya . Her class mate was Prafulla Nalini Brahmma, a member of revolutionary organisation. In 1930 the inhuman torture of the British police touchd her mind. They thought that the country would prosper if the British was driven out. She learnt sword and Lathi operation. She began to practice revolver by the side of Maynamati hill. In 1931 they formed a Chatri Sangha of which Prafulla nalini was the president, Suniti Choudhury was the Captain and she became the secretary. At the instruction of their leader she and Suniti went to hand over an identity card to the security sking an interview to meet District Magistrate of Coomilla Stephens with a view to assassinate him. When the magistrate came out of his chamber she and Sunity fired simultaneously. The lifeless Stephen's body fell flat. They had to bear tremendous torture. But police could not get any information after many interrogation. In trial they were sentenced for life imprisonment as they were not adult. The student community flared up to see their fighting mood. They moved the whole district with songs ad slogans.After seven years they were released in 1939 along with other prisoners at the request of Gandhiji. She was married with Chittaranjan das of Chittagong in 1942. Her important creation was "Arun-Bahni"  


Santi Das, Kabir was born in Derhadun. Her ancestor's house was at Sylet.  She was an M.A. She and her sister Bina Das established a girl's School namely, " Dipabali Shiksha Mandir" in their house at Calcutta.She and some other female members of Congress organised "Nari Satyagraha Samity". Urmila Devi became president of this organisation. She and Bimalprativa Devi were jt. sectretaries, This organisation successfully organised civil disobedience and stopped selling of foreign clothes. She was arrested while organising picketing . She had to go to several jails from 1930-32.Later she devoted herself to several social works.She was married with Prof. Humayun Kabirin 1932.
