Charusila devi was born in midnapore in 1883. When Kshudiram was living in the house of his elder sister in the suburbs of Midnapore, she put marks on his forehead with red sandal wood and initiated him with patriotism. Kshudirm remained underground in her house when he wanted to go to Mazaffarpur to assassinate Kingsford in 1908.She organised a women organisation to participate the movement of civil disobedience in 1921.
Womens Role in Midnapore
Women of Midnapore went a step further and hoisted national flag in the prominent buildings of the district. To cite few examples, Kananbala Pattanayak, and Sabitri Devi led a procession of women and hoisted national flagin the Munsiff's Court Compound and were arrested. Four women, namely, Adharmoni devi, Sadhanabala devi, Kamalkumari devi, and Charusila Devi were arrested for hoisting national flag in the Ghatal sub-divisional criminal court compound.
She performed bravely in the salt movement. She obstructed police to take action and deivered lectures in different places to organise mass. In one meeting police charged with lathis while she was delivering lectures. An arrest warant was issued in her name. She came to Kharagpur and tried to collect fund in a meeting. She was imprisoned for six months for organising procession without permission . She forced the Govt officials to allow the widows in the jail to cook for themselves. She was jailed for one and half years in 1932 for participating in civil disobedience movement. She was absconded for eight years after the murder of the district Magistrate Mr. Burge.She came back to Calcutta after release in 1938.when she became a teacher of a Primary School.
