Life
Sarala Devi was born in Jorasanko, Kolkata in 1872 to a well known Bengali intellectual family. Her father Janakinath Ghosal was one of the earliest secretaries and founder of the Bengal Congress. Her mother Swarnakumari Devi was the first successful woman novelist of Bengali literature. Swarnakumari Devi was the daughter of 'Maharshi' Debendranath Tagore, a leading Brahmo leader and elder sister of legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore. In 1886, she passed her University Entrance examination. In 1890, She passed her B.A. examination in English literature from Calcutta University at theage of seventeen and received the Padmavati Gold Medal. She was also one of the few women graduates of her time, and probably the first woman political leader from Bengal in the Indian independence movement She was the first woman representative in Bombay congress in 1889..

In Calcutta Congress of 1901 she sung her own composed song ""Atit Gourab bahini mama Bani / Gao aji hindusthan. and in Banaras congress in 1905 she sung Bandemataram and in that she sung as "tris koti " instead of "saptakoti'.. 1905, she was married to Pandit Rambhuj Dutt Chaudhary (1866–1923), a journalist, and member of Arya Samaj and Congress. Their son Dipak Dutt married Radha, grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi.She opened "Lakshmir Bhandar" for promoting Swadeshi clothes. She observed "Pratapaditya Utsab" in Calcutta and Birashtami Brata Utsab in 1903. She helped Jatindranath Bandyopadhyay to form first revolutionary organisation. For expansion of female education she founded "Bharatiya Stree Mahamandal". She presided over Bangasahitya Sammelan in Birbhum and Lucknow. She was editor of Bharati magazine from 1302 bangabda. Her husband died on 6.8.1923.She was the first woman of Bengal who supported Non Cooperation movement. She was composer of many patriotic songs. She was closely connected with Lala Lajpath Roy, Gokhale, Tilak and Gandhiji..

Gifted, well-informed, dynamic and driven, Saraladevi was 29 when Gandhi first saw her, in 1901, conducting an orchestra as it played a song she had written for the Congress Party. By his own admission, Gandhi had developed a soft corner for and was specially enamoured by Sarala Devi.
