855. Soumendranath Thakur (1901-1974)
Soumendranath Tagore (1910–1974), son of Sudhindranath Tagore and grandson of Dwijendranath Tagore, was born in Jorasanko and was a great orator. He was a name to reckon with in the cultural arena in the 1960s and 1970s. He was associated with the communist movement from his younger days and founder of RCPI. He was the great grand son of Debendranath Tagore.Inspite of being born in Tagore family he was a folloer of Revolutionary path. He was well known in International Communist world. In the Calcutta Congress of 1917 he and Dinendranath Tagore sung " Desh desh nandita Kari". He joined in the Conference of All India Students'federation in Allahabad in 1921. He was closely linked with Muzaffar Ahmed and Nazru Islam through "Langal" , a peasant and workers' mouth piece. He publishe Bengali version of Communist Manifesto in this magazine.He went to Moscow to represent India in the 6th Comintern in 1928 and became one of the leader of this movement. As a result he had to live in British and German prison for some time. After returning India he was in Jail for 8 years till the freedom was wqon.He formed RCPI in 1937.He participoated in music and cultural life along with politics. He was a successful writer in Kallol.
Soumendranath Tagore married Srimati Hutheesingh from an aristocratic Jain Gujarati family of Ahmedabad. She was a student in Shantiniketan and a well known dancer and choreographer who took training in dance in India and abroad. Srimati Tagore's brother Raj N Hutheesingh married Krishna Nehru, younger daughter of Motilal Nehru and sister of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
