247. Tulsicharan Goswami (1898-1957)
Tulsicharan Goswami was born in Sreerampur Hooghly in 1898.He was a freedom fighter and an orator.He started practice as a lawyer in Calcutta High Court after passing barrister y from England. Later he joined the freedom struggle at the call of Deshabandhu Chittaranjan Das. He joined in Swarajya Party of Deshabandhu in 1923 and became editor of "Forward", the weekly mouthpiece of the Party.He was elected as a member of Central Legislative Assembly in 1923. He became the deputy leader of the opposition party.He called a huge gathering in Calcutta aginst the Communal Award (In August 1932 Prime Minister MacDonald announced his Communal Award, Great Britain’s unilateral attempt to resolve the various conflicts among India’s many communal interests. The award, which was later incorporated into the act of 1935, expanded the separate-electorate formula reserved for Muslims to other minorities, including Sikhs, Indian Christians, Anglo-Indians, Europeans, distinct...) of Govt. of India. He was elected as a member of Constituent Assembly from Bengal and became deputy leader of Congress Party. He became finance minister in the cabinet of Khaja Nazimuddin. He was not in favour of division of Bengal. He gave up Congress in 1947.
